Zupa mleczna
ZOO-pa MLECH-na
Warm milk soup, the dish milk bars were named for. Choose:
- z makaronem with noodles
- z ryżem with rice
Good news: the meat-free dishes are the heart of a milk bar, and thanks to the state subsidy they're also the cheapest thing on the board. Pierogi, pancakes, dumplings, soups and a long list of sides.
Soups are often cooked on meat stock, even when there's no meat in the bowl. Not sure? Ask 'bez mięsa?' (bez MYEN-sah, without meat?) at the till.
About the photos: they show what each dish typically looks like. The real thing will vary from bar to bar in portion size, plating and look.

Warm milk soup, the dish milk bars were named for. Choose:

Semolina cooked in milk. Choose a topping:

A hard-boiled egg, often served with mayonnaise or chives. Cheap protein to go with your roll.

A bread roll, plain or with toppings:

Clear, deep-red beetroot soup. Sweet and sour. Served:

Dumplings with potato and white cheese, topped with fried onion. Don't leave Poland without trying them.

Dumplings with sauerkraut and mushrooms.

Sweet fruit dumplings with sour cream and sugar. In season:

Sweet dumplings filled with white cheese, served with sour cream and sugar.

Thin pancakes with sweet white cheese, sometimes with cream.

Potato dumplings with fruit inside, served with butter, breadcrumbs and sugar. Depending on the season:

Rice with stewed apples, sour cream and sugar. A sweet main Polish kids grow up on.

Crispy potato pancakes. Served:

Fried egg with potatoes and mizeria. Simple and very Polish.

Chips (French fries). The kids' favourite, and a common swap for potatoes.

Warm grated carrot cooked with butter and a little flour. Soft and slightly sweet.

Creamed spinach, cooked down to a smooth green purée with garlic. Classic with a fried egg and potatoes.

Raw shredded salad of the day. Common ones:

Raw grated carrot salad, often with apple and a little lemon. Fresh and slightly sweet.

A simple side salad: soft lettuce with a few slices of tomato and cucumber. Dressed:

Milk pudding topped with fruit syrup (sok). Flavours:

Black coffee, often 'parzona': ground coffee brewed straight in the glass, so let the grounds settle.

Caffeine-free grain coffee with milk. Pure childhood nostalgia for Poles.

Fermented milk drinks. This is a milk bar, after all:
