Kraków Christmas market
what to eat & what it costs
Every winter the Main Square fills with wooden stalls selling grilled oscypek, pierogi, sausages and mulled wine under the Cloth Hall. It's one of the prettiest Christmas markets in Europe, but eating your way through it isn't cheap. Here's when it's on, what to try, typical prices and where to get a proper hot lunch for a fraction of the cost, a few minutes' walk away.

The market usually opens at the end of November and runs until about New Year. For 2026, the opening is expected around 27 November; the closing date (1, 3 or 6 January) is announced by the organisers. Last season it ran from 28 November to 1 January.

Typically from about 10:00 until 21:00, a little later on Fridays and Saturdays. Food and drink stalls often stay open longer. On Christmas Eve (24 December) most stalls close early or don't open.

The main market is on the Main Square (Rynek Główny), around the Cloth Hall. A smaller one sets up on Mały Rynek, the little square just behind St Mary's Basilica.

What to eat at the stalls
Oscypek z żurawiną
Smoked sheep's cheese from the Tatra mountains, grilled until soft and served with cranberry jam. The signature Kraków winter snack.
Grzaniec
Hot mulled wine with spices and orange (grzaniec galicyjski), sometimes mulled beer. Depending on the stall it comes in a paper cup or a mug, sometimes with a small deposit you get back.
Pierogi
Dumplings with cabbage and mushroom, meat or potato and cheese, often fried on a big griddle. Good, but the market price is roughly double what a milk bar charges.
Sausages & grilled meat
Grilled kiełbasa with bread and mustard, pork knuckle and skewers from huge open grills.
Żurek & bigos
Sour rye soup, sometimes served in a bread bowl, and hunter's stew of sauerkraut and meat. Filling on a cold evening.
Something sweet
Gingerbread (pierniki), chocolate-dipped fruit, hot chocolate and doughnuts. More in our guide to Polish Christmas desserts.

All milk bars →Do what locals do: have a proper lunch in a milk bar, then come back to the market for oscypek and a mulled wine after dark, when the lights are on. These are the closest to the Main Square.
Many milk bars close or shorten their hours on 24–26 December and 1 January. Check before you go.
Tips for a cold evening
Go after dark
The lights come on in the late afternoon, and it gets dark around 16:00 in December. Weekday evenings are calmer than weekends.
Check the price first
Pierogi and grilled meat are often sold by weight or by the piece. Ask the price before they start filling the plate: "Ile kosztuje?" (EE-leh kosh-TOO-yeh).
Szopki: the Kraków nativity scenes
On the first Thursday of December (3 December 2026) the city's famous glittering nativity scenes are shown on the Main Square for the annual contest. The tradition is on UNESCO's intangible heritage list.
Dress for it
December evenings in Kraków are often around or below freezing. Warm shoes matter more than you think on the cobbles.
